Whats important to you at work -

Whats important to you at work - Do you feel empowered as a job seeker? Do you have a list of needs and wants? Are you bored at work, but havent taken any steps to remedy the problem? I recently came across some of Penelope Trunks videos. (Hat tip @LRuettimann.) This is an older video, but I think these points Penelope identifies as most important to Gen Y job seekers is, in one sense, timeless. (I think it is also true that these are values for a lot of people who are not Gen Y.) They value time over money. They recognize that it is important to have friends at work. Location is key. View Penelopes video: What do you think? What is most important for you as a job seeker? How do you evaluate an opportunity? What makes the difference for you, and how do those things change depending on your situation? What are you doing to help yourself land the opportunity that is best suited to your needs?

The 25 Highest Paying Internships

The 25 Highest Paying Internships The unpaid internship, and all the coffee-making, dry clean-fetching cliches that come with it, has fallen out of favor. In its place, a new summer job has emerged â€" one with real responsibility, and a real paycheck. Job reviews site Glassdoor’s released the 25 best-paying internships in the U.S. that are currently taking applications, and every opening is better compensated than the average American job. If an intern at, say, Amazon, SalesForce, or ExxonMobile stays on for an entire year, their salary would top $70,000, the report says. A Facebook internship for the same duration would bring in a cool $96,000; almost double the median wage for workers in the U.S. Most of the open spots are in tech, engineering and software roles, but there are a few exceptions. An “environmental specialist” intern at Chevron makes $60,000 in a 12-month stint. An “analyst intern” at Deutsche Bank, for her part, would make $55,680. Here’s the full list, as reported by U.S.-based interns on Glassdoor. Class of 2021, take heed. 1. Facebook Median Monthly Pay: $8,000 2. Microsoft Median Monthly Pay: $7,100 3. What to Expect from Your Contract Employee - Your Career Intel

What to Expect from Your Contract Employee - Your Career IntelIn my 30 years of recruiting, I dont know that Ive ever seen a hiring market as tricky as this one. The unemployment rate is at a record low, and the margins for talent are slim. So its no wonder employers are turning to contract laborand as my colleagues have shared previously, there are plenty of great reasons to bring in contract help.A thoughtfully placed contractor or two can serve as a sturdy stopgap between the departure of a teammate and the hiring of their replacement. They can also help you get some extra muscle behind the projects that dont stop just because your team is down a player. But if youre thinking that the contractor you place will be a true replacement for your open role, you should manage your expectations a bit. When you bring in a short-term contractor to sub in for a long-term role, there are few things you need to remember.Keep your wish list shortOne of the biggest missteps I see employers making when they put out a call for contract employees is they vet candidates through the lens of what they need from a full-time, permanent employee. This costs a fair amount of time on the front endthink of all those fruitless interviewsand only leads to disappointment. While it might be true that a full-time candidate needs to be proficient in several key areas, when a short-term arrangement is the name of the game, its better to think about the top three things you need someone to tackle.I place contract employees in accounting roles, for example, and the software can be fairly specialized. Hiring a full-time CPA with experience using Oracle might be the long-term goal, but a contractor CPA with experience in large enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools might be the right solution to get you through the hiring process with your full-time candidate.Im not suggesting you settle, but I do recommend you keep the big picture front of mind. If youre hiring a contractor to fill in while yo u recruit a full-time hire, finding someone who is adaptable might be the perfect short-term solution. And your energy is better focused on your permanent hire search while a contractor keeps the work from piling up.Consider a contracting liferIn the gig economy, there are many professionals that actually prefer contract work. I often remind my clients of this before we start the search for a contractor, because in a traditional hiring situation, someone whos worn multiple hats at various companies in a short amount of time can look indecisivewhats with all the job hopping? But toss that bias out the window in the contract market. A resume with several projects or employers in the last year can be a signal that a contractor is both seasoned and in demand. The other reason I bring this up with clients is that some of them are extra choosy with their contractors because theyre holding-gesellschaft out hope for a contract-to-hire candidate. While its true that there are folks in the mar ket looking for contract-to-hire opportunities, you might be able to find a more reliable resource in someone who has chosen contract work for the foreseeable future. Some of the most reliable contractors in my network, in fact, have 20-plus years of experience and would likely never choose to return to a full-time gig. But theyre seasoned, and they enjoy the variety and freedom that comes with short-term arrangements. The gig economy is forecasted to continue to grow and change, so I imagine the talent poolsand my advice on what to expect from themwill evolve, too. But Id love to hear your thoughts on best practices for bringing in contractors while placing full-time roles. How do you manage your expectations and keep the most important work top of mind? How Do IRAs Work

How Do IRAs Work Raise your pfote if youve ever heard the phrase its never too early to start saving for retirement. Okay, you can put your hand down now.Yes, youve likely come across this ubiquitous phrase at some point or another. I definitely have. Actually, I have heard it every year since I turned 18. Typically it comes up at a family gathering or as some aside from a professor during a lecture. And like most of my fellow millennials, I put that advice about having a retirement plan on the back burner, assuming I would just wake up one day and figure it out. Besides, I couldnt be bothered with saving for the future. I mean, that entire box set ofFriendswasnt going to watch itself (for the sixth time). Why you need to prepare for retirementThat is, until I got an internship at a financial tech startup. Saving and preparing for retirement is a very important part of adulting. The aufgabe is, even after you know youre supposed to do it, its hard to knowhowto do it. There is such an overwhelming amount of information out there about where to invest, in what, and how much, that its hard to know where to start. Its easier to just keep putting it off for your future self. But, youre not Ted Mosby, and with this basic guide to retirement savings, you wont want to keep putting it off anyway. Youll learn the basics of where and how to start financial planning so you can ensure your future self is taken care of.And it all starts with the IRA.What is an IRA, and how do IRAs work?IRA stands for IndividualRetirementAccount. How do IRAs work in comparison to 401(K)s which youve likely also heard about? Whereas a 401(K) is set up by your employer and managed through them, an Individual Retirement Account is set up by you and managed by the financial institution of your choosing. Unlike the 401(K), there are two different kinds of IRA to choose from the traditional and the Roth. How do I decide on which schriftart of IRA is right for me?The type of IRA you want will depend on your lifestyle, earnings, and retirement expectations.Traditional IRATraditional IRAs do not charge you taxes on the contributions you make to your account. Thereisa contribution limit for traditional IRAs. As an account holder, youre allowed to contribute $5,500 each year if youre under 50 and $6,500 if youre over 50, tax-free, and you may even qualify for annual tax deductions on your contributions. The Traditional IRA also has no income limitations--meaning you can actively contribute to and hold your Traditional IRA regardless of what you make, as long as you are under 70 and have a taxable income. Your income may impact whether or not your contributions are deductible, though. You are taxed, however, when you withdraw your money. Once youve hit 59 and are ready to withdraw from your account, you will be taxed according to the tax bracket you are in at the time of your withdrawal. With the traditional, once you hit 70, you must start to withdraw from your account.Roth IRAThe Roth IRAis similar you can only contribute $5,500 a year if you are under 50 and $6,500 if you are over 50 you are eligible to begin withdrawing once you are 59 , and it is open to anyone with a taxable income. Those are the similarities, but the Roth IRA has some very significant differences. TheRoth IRA contribution limit is based on your modified adjusted gross income, depending on tax-filing status. With Roth IRAs, as an account holder you are taxed on your contributions, but not taxed once you reach retirement age and begin to withdraw from your account, and the contributions you do make each year are not tax-deductible. There is also an income limit of $132,000 for single income and $194,000 for joint incomes. But, there is no mandatory age when you have to start withdrawing for retirement. What it really comes down to is whether you want to pay taxes upfront with your contributions, or once you begin to withdraw your money. If you expect to be in a higher tax bracket when you retire, then the Roth would make mora sense since you would be charged more in taxes for your withdrawal than you would pay for your contributions. If you plan to be in the same tax bracket and exceed the income contribution limitation or prefer to havetax-deductible contributions, then the Traditional would be best for you.How do I get one? There are several places to set up an IRA. Choose a financial institution you trust--these can be banks where you have a checking or savings account, or online options like SoFi or Fidelity. Some places have required minimums to open accounts, so do your homework on how much it will cost you to open an IRA account. What do I do once I have one?Contribute the maximum amount to your account. You can add $5,500 annually, so try to hit that mark before the year is up to really take advantage of your IRA and prepare for your future. Youll get the largest return on your investment if youre putting in the full amount each year. You can also indicate wheth er you want to have a beneficiary associated with your account. A beneficiary of an IRA will receive the benefits from the account if the account owner passes away (beneficiaries of an IRA are required to include taxable distributions they receive in their gross income). Then what? You wait and watch it grow. Yourcontributionswill begin to earn compound interest, which means your money will be earning money until you are retirement age and ready to start withdrawing. Depending on which IRA you have, you can start drawing from your account once youre 59 . If you have Traditional, you are required to start withdrawing once youre 70.How do you decide which type of IRA to get?Ultimately, envision what you want your future to look like and then pick the IRA that works best for you so you can start squirreling away your money and have enough to live on when retirement comes. Its not as hefty of a burden as maybe you expect. Just a few hundred dollars here and there will grow over timeand le ssen the stress when youre older. If youre leise unsure of which IRA works with your lifestyle and your financial goals, make an appointment with a trusted financial planner to go over your wealth, your lifestyle and your expectations to build a retirement plan that is unique to you.--Alexandra Deabler is a writer and editor. When You Should Exclude Your Education from Your Resume

When You Should Exclude Your Education from Your ResumeWhen You Should Exclude Your Education from Your ResumeDecidingwhether or not to include your education on your resume can be difficult. Its not as though employers wont become aware of your education history prior to making the decision to hire you, but its presence on your resume (as well as its absence) can make or break your ability to land a job.Related How to format your resumes education sectionHere are eight questions to think about when considering whether or not to include education in your resume1. Do you have a degree? If you only have a high school diploma, you can likely get by without having an education section.Even if a high school diploma is specifically listed as a requirement for the job, this detail is almost always addressed in the actual job application or during the bewerberinterview, and doesnt need to be addressed in the limited space of a resume. If you attended college but didnt graduate, you can still l ist your education on your resume. List the personenname of your institution, along with a line clarifying X years completed or X credit hours completed. If you are a current student, include your anticipated graduation date, preceded by degree expected or similar wording.2. Is your resume too long?Ideally, your resume should be limited toone page. If you find that your resume content is spilling onto a second page, and you have trimmed all the information you can, consider removing the education section.Education is almost always addressed in the official job application, and this is where hiring managers look for the base requirements during the background check.3. Is your resume too short?Early in your career, your resume will look a little sparse. An employment history that doesnt reach back very far is a cleara sign of inexperience. Depending on what youre applying for, this can decrease your chances of being considered.By adding an education section, you can fill up some of the gaps and flesh out your resume so it stands a better chance of being taken seriously. Perhaps you have a lot of recent and relevant coursework, or demonstrated leadership by serving as president of a club. Adding pertinent details can bolster your candidacy.Check to see if your resume is the optimal length??4. Is your education your strongest qualification? You may have little or nowork experience in your chosenfield, but a recent and relevant degree is sometimes all you need to get your foot in the door.If you attended an elite school, received a prestigious scholarship, or completed a thesis or dissertation, your education credentials might be especially interesting to employers. If your education is your greatest asset, your education section should be prominently featured on your resume- you can even lead with it.5. Is education a primary requirement? For medical jobs, or other specialties such as law or science, a certaineducation level can be an absolute requirement. Dont leave your education off your resume if you have the educational background that is required for the position, obviously. For example, a research assistant may be expected to have a related degree, or be actively pursuing one. If education is a key requirement for the job youre interested in, it should absolutely be listed in your resume.6. Does your education open you up to age discrimination? With age comes wisdombut also the potential for age discrimination during the hiring process.Age discrimination is a real problem workers face today, especially with so many start-ups being run by young entrepreneurs.A candidates age can, even subconsciously, influence hiring managers to make judgements about their fit with the companyculture or their skill set. Baby Boomers are particularly susceptible to this kind of judgment. If hiring managers look at your resume and see that you graduated from college decades ago, they might discount your education as outdated.Consider leaving off the years you a ttended, or your graduation date. This doesnt mean you should try to hide your age, but be strategic about what information you reveal when. The less a hiring manager knows about you at beginning of the hiring process, the less likely they are to use this information against you.The best rule of thumb here is When in doubt, leave it out.7. Is your degree unrelated? Are you applying for a job as a banker, but you hold a degree in basket weaving? A situation like this could stand between you and a job, and leaving your education off your resume could actually keep the door open for you to make it to the next stage. If you are applying for a job totally unrelated to your degree, it can give the impression that you are not very invested in the role, and would be more likely to leave the company for another opportunity. If a degree isnt required for a given position, then listing one that doesnt even relate isnt necessarily going to help you.On the flip side, some hiring managers are lookin g for a degree as a sign that you are capable of sticking with something, and nothing more. Earning a degree shows a certain amount of dedication and drive, which appeal to hiring managers.8. Does your education make you overqualified?Someone who appears overqualified for a position is seen as a flight risk. That is, a hiring manager assumes there is a good chance they will find something that better matches their experience level and jump ship after the company has invested time and money into training. Employee turnover is expensive, and something companies obviously want to avoid. The result Highly qualified professionals are being overlooked in lieu of applicants who meet just the minimum requirements for a job.Not all is lost here. You still have the opportunity to impress the hiring manager during the interview and make yourself the clear choice. You just have to do what you can to get to that step, and that might mean cutting out unnecessary educational qualifications.HAVE TWO MINUTES?Learn how Jobscan can optimize your resume for the tech used by most recruiters. How to Scan a Resume with Jobscan (208)Explore the Resume Match Report (223)???Full text tutorialGet your own report
